Uploading documents
Add documents to your Synjar workspace to make them searchable with AI.
Supported file types

Upload methods
Drag and drop
- Open your workspace
- Drag files from your computer onto the document area
- Release to upload
Multiple files can be uploaded at once.
Click to upload
- Click the Upload button
- Select files from your computer
- Click Open
Bulk upload
For large numbers of files:
- Click Upload > Bulk Upload
- Select multiple files or a folder
- All files are queued for processing
During upload
You'll see:
- Upload progress bar
- File name and size
- Status indicator
After upload
Documents go through processing:
- Uploading - File transferring to storage
- Processing - AI analyzing and indexing content
- Ready - Document is searchable
Most documents complete processing in under 60 seconds.
Adding metadata
When uploading, you can add:
- Title - Display name (defaults to filename)
- Purpose - How this document will be used (default: Knowledge)
- Knowledge - Searchable documents. Use for content you want to find via AI search. Also available in Instruction Sets.
- Instruction - Only for Instruction Sets. Not searchable, but loaded in full when used.
- Tags - Categories for organization and filtering
- Description - Optional notes about the document
When to use Instruction purpose
Choose Instruction for documents like prompts, guidelines, or templates that you want to include in Instruction Sets but don't need in search results.
Best practices
Prepare documents
- Remove password protection from PDFs
- Ensure text is selectable (not scanned images)
- Use clear file names
Organize as you upload
- Add tags consistently
- Use descriptive titles
- Group related documents
Quality matters
- Clear, well-structured documents search better
- Break very long documents into logical sections
- Remove duplicate content
Troubleshooting
Upload fails
- Check file size limits
- Verify file format is supported
- Ensure stable internet connection
Processing fails
- File may be corrupted
- PDF may be scanned images (OCR not yet supported)
- Try re-uploading
Document not searchable
- Wait for processing to complete
- Check document status shows "Ready"
- Verify content exists (empty files won't be indexed)
